There will be some insurance
companies that do not offer insurance for certain
breeds of dog such as pit bulls and other known
aggressive dog breeds so you will need to honestly
disclose what breed of dog you own.
If you have a dog and it bites someone, you can be
sued for bodily injury to a third party. You can and
should however protect yourself from this by
purchasing liability on your renter’s insurance
policy. Make it clear to your agent or while
requesting a quote online that you want coverage for
any damages caused by your pet.
Personal liability coverage will protect against any
claim caused by an unintentional act. This coverage
includes the actions of your pets. It is very
important that you obtain this type of coverage in
your renter’s policy to cover yourself in the event
that you pet causes harm to another or should in
some way damage property.
Remember animals can cause damage without really
trying. Hardwood floors can be damaged by dogs and
cats clawing them, same with carpeting and cats. And
we can’t forget the stains that can be left behind
on floors caused by pets. Your landlord will usually
charge a pet deposit that will not be returned if
there is any damage caused that will need repair.
You can submit a claim to your insurance carrier if
this occurs, but only if you have this type of
coverage.
